03.01.12New tracks up in the listen section
I put up a couple of sneak preview tracks from the album that I'm working on with my father. We're almost done recording it and very excited about the music. Pretty Polly is a traditional tune that features my father on banjo and vocals and myself on trumpet and harmony vocals. Masquerade Ball is a tune that I wrote to some lyrics that my father wrote about 30 years ago! It features Phil on lead vocals, banjo, guitar, and myself on trumpet, bass, harmony vocals and both of us on cardboard box percussion! Hope you like it!
02.07.12Just recorded new Either/Orchestra album
Just spent two full days in the studio recording a new album with the Either/Orchestra. "The Collected Unconscious" is a sweet of music written by Russ Gershon, commissioned by a Chamber Music of America grant. I'm looking forward to this coming out in the near future!
02.07.12New Phil and Daniel Rosenthal CD in the works!
During the last 6 months I've been writing and arranging a lot of music for a new recording project with my father, Phil Rosenthal. This music is a lot different than stuff I've written for my jazz groups, it's much more in the folk/bluegrass tradition. Over the last few weeks we've started to record some of it. We're recording the album at my father's home studio in Connecticut on an 8 track reel-to-reel tape machine. We're both very excited to be recording on tape, which has such warm natural sound. Hopefully, we'll finish the recording in the next few weeks and release the cd later this year. The music features my father on lead vocals, guitar, banjo and mandolin. I'm playing trumpet, acoustic bass and singing harmony vocals. My sister, Naomi Sommers, sings harmony vocals on a few tracks, and my mother will sing a little harmony as well. I'll post a few rough mixes up here soon!

Some other good friends are on the list, including Russ Gershon, and the E/O's latest cd was listed as one of the top albums of the year!

06.02.11Back from Ethiopia!
Just got back from a 10 day trip to Ethiopia with the Either/Orchestra. We had an amazing time! Got to play some great venues including the National Theatre and City Theatre in Addis Ababa, the Yared music school, Adama University and the Alliance Francaise in Addis and Dire Dawa.
We collaborated with some great Ethiopian musicians and played some very cool music by Nerses Nalbandian. There should be a dvd/cd documenting our performances coming out sometime in the near future.
03.19.11E/O goes to Ethiopia
I'll be going to Ethiopia in May with the Either/Orchestra to play in a festival dedicated to the music of Nerses Albandian. We'll be there from May 10 to 17. Details tba
11.15.10CD and MMW
The Either/Orchestra's new CD "Mood Music for Time Traveller's" is doing very well in the jazz radio charts and getting great reviews.
This Saturday, along with the other horn players from the E/O, I'll be sitting in with Medeski, Martin and Wood at the House of Blues in Boston! This should be very fun - we'll be playing an Ethiopian tune and a few other things.
09.25.10back from the UK
Just got back from a 10 day trip to the UK performing with my father, Phil Rosenthal. Got a lot of surprised compliments from people that enjoyed my bluegrass trumpet stylings. We played everywhere from the South of England to the Scottish Highlands - lots of driving on the wrong side of the road!
06.09.10New Rough Mixes in Listen Section!
I've been working hard on mixing my upcoming cd - you can listen to two tracks in the Listen section - Don't Call and Mayu - they're still rough mixes and need a little work.
Just put up three tracks from a recent gig w/ Characteristic Pitches at the Lily Pad. The bass player locked his bass in his car, so it's just sax, trumpet, piano and drums. sounds pretty good though.
New Releases: Mulatu Astatke: Mulatu Steps Ahead - Strut Records March 2010
- This record features the E/O with legendary Ethiopian musician, Mulatu Astatke
Characteristic Pitches: Multitudes - Silta Records January 2010
- Paolo Latazi - drums, Robin Eubanks - trombone, Rick Stone - alto, Lefteris Kordis - piano, Greg Loughman - drums, DR - trumpet
Almost done with my recording project - one more song to record, and then mixing, mastering, etc. I'm trying to have the finished product available by the end of the summer. All tunes that I wrote over the last year, and one tune by Monk and one by Wes Corbet. Featuring four of my closest friends - Rick Stone, Kendall Eddy, Austin McMahon and Wes. You can listen to a rough mix of one of the tunes - Mayu - in the "Listen" section of this website.
